Do you still remember what it’s like to watch a movie at the cinemas?

By this Thursday (February 18), cinemas across Hong Kong would have been closed for 78 days straight due to the tightening of health regulations amid the fourth wave of COVID-19.

But on this day, with a drop in the daily number of infections since Chinese New Year, cinemas are finally set to open—for the first time in 2021!

Rest assured that cinemas will have to operate under new safety measures (such as mandatory mask-wearing, crowd control, and use of the government’s LeaveHomeSafe app).

1. Soul

What is it that makes you... you? Pixar's latest film takes its middle-school band teacher character to to "The Great Before," and explores a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities. Beautiful animation aside, the film also tackles some of life's most important questions in a child-friendly and sophisticated story.

2. Shock Wave 2《拆彈專家 2》

A terrorist organization threatens to bomb landmarks in Hong Kong. Fortunately, this is just part of a plot that builds on the widespread success of the first Shock Wave movie. If you'd like to get your heart racing at the cinemas, this locally produced blockbuster is the movie for you.

3. Wonder Woman 1984

Here's a sequel to an even greater global box office success. This follow-up to the first Wonder Woman will bring the title character to the 80s as she faces off against two new villains (including Cheetah) amid the Cold War.

4. The Way We Keep Dancing《狂舞派 3》

In this more down-to-earth film set in Kowloon Industrial District, Hong Kong artists struggle against the government's plans to gentrify the area. Watch for dance sequences set against some recognizable streets from the city!

5. Assassins

Wrapping up this list is a film of another sort: a documentary about the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, half-brother of Kim Jong-un, current leader of North Korea. An official selection at the Sundance Film Festival, this film dissects all evidence from the case through a sometimes chilling investigation.
