A filmmaking and mental health initiative.
About
Despite an increased awareness of mental health in recent years, many young people find it difficult to express their thoughts and emotions, making it harder for others to understand and support them.
Film Stylo’s mission is to provide a creative platform for teenagers to share their perspectives through the power of film, and facilitate important discussions that educate parents, teachers and students on adolescent mental health.
Each year, students at participating schools create personal films based on a common theme, leading to community screening events that foster empathy for young people’s lives.

How it Works
Film Stylo aims to address student, parent and teacher education on adolescent mental health through creative workshops and events. It promotes participants’ ability to self-reflect and express their emotions, as well as audiences’ understanding of adolescent development in an authentic way, empowered by the film medium.
Currently, Film Stylo is available to secondary schools in Hong Kong.

Background
Film Stylo was developed by Babel Film Workshop founder Jeremy Hung at Yale University and child psychiatrist Dr. Eunice Yuen at the Yale School of Medicine, with support from the Yale-China Association and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York.
During Covid-19, Jeremy and Dr. Yuen co-authored a research study on Film Stylo’s positive effects on adolescent mental health, finding it offers a novel intervention in fostering emotional wellness and empathy in both student filmmakers and audience members, with significant implications for families and school communities. The study has been presented to mental health professionals at the American Association of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
