What to Watch at the New M+ Cinema Opening this June

A brand new cinema opens in Hong Kong at M+

Opening June 8 at Hong Kong’s new “museum of visual culture,” the M+ Cinema is set to become a new major cinema destination in our city, connecting audiences to a diverse array of important new and classic films.

Unlike most commercial cinema chains, M+ Cinema curates its screenings as part of a wider framework based on M+ museum’s exhibitions, creating richer cultural experiences through screenings of feature films, documentaries, video art, restored classics, and new films.

Kicking off the cinema’s grand opening is a programme called “Hong Kong: The Establishing Shot,” which “celebrates the city’s illustrious cinematic heritage as well as its iconic urban landscapes through the lens of its filmmakers,” including works by renowned directors Ann Hui and Wong Kar-wai.

M+ Cinema joins the likes of other arthouse cinemas in Hong Kong, like Broadway Cinematheque and Louis Koo Cinema at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, and will provide opportunities for audiences to view both Hong Kong and international avant-garde works.

The cinema’s three theaters (totaling 280 seats) are equipped with the latest screening technology, with digital and 16mm and 35mm projection facilities, and fitted with designer furniture, to ensure audiences get the best viewing experience possible.

Below are the 6 programmes inaugurating the opening of M+ Cinema. Tickets are on sale now!
